“The Graduating Artists’ Final Farewell”

As the 2017-2018 school year nears its end, students and teachers begin preparation on a
beloved annual tradition. The senior art show allows graduating students a final chance to
display their hard work created over the course of the year. “The senior art show is a collection
of all of the work that the students do,” says visual arts teacher Teresa Phipps. “It features the
senior AP and IB students. Artists that I have for more than a year, or even three years, have all
of their work combined.”
Though this has been an annual tradition for a while at GHS, this year’s senior art show
promises to be especially exciting. Previous years have featured political statements, work
highlighting social injustice, and portraits of actual students at Germantown High School. Phipps
believes that her students this year have created unique works of art that express their own
personalities “I’m allowing the students to really develop their own voice. I think all that in one
place is going to be really powerful.”
The show, which opens on April 15th, takes place in the Poplar Pike Playhouse theatre.
The exhibition is open to the public over two weeks. However, April 15th from 2-4 pm is the
opening reception. Those who attend can enjoy light refreshments and live piano accompaniment
while taking in the artwork.
The GHS Senior Art Show begins April 15th with a reception from 2-4 pm and runs
through April 27th. For further information, contact the Poplar Pike Playhouse at (901) 755-
