DAVID E. CHIPMAN - director of bands
David E. Chipman is currently in his twenty-seventh year serving as a music educator and first year as Director of Bands at Germantown HS. Prior to coming to GHS, Mr. Chipman served for twenty five years as Director of Bands, Music Dept. Chair and IB Music instructor at Bolton High School.
A native Memphian, Mr. Chipman is an honor graduate of Overton High School and also a graduate of the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree, where he has also completed several graduate courses. While at U of M, he was a member of ‘The Mighty Sound of The South’ Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble (playing trombone and euphonium) Trombone Choir, Brass Ensemble and The ‘Southern Comfort’ Jazz Ensemble. His major professors included: Dr. Charles Schulz, Professor Gene Rush, Professor Tim Goodwin and the late Dr. Sidney J. McKay and Dr. Douglas C. Lemmon
Mr. Chipman has served on staff for the Tennessee Ambassador's of Music, 2017 European tour where he conducted concert band performances in England, France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
Mr. Chipman's professional affiliations include National Association for Music Education (NAfME), International Assoc. for Jazz Education (IAJE, International Trombone Association (ITA), Tennessee Music Education Association Board (TMEA) Tennessee Bandmasters Association (TBA), West TN School Band and Orchestra Association (WTSBOA) and Tennessee Education Association. He has also been inducted into the prestigious American School Band Director Assocation (ASBDA). Mr. Chipman has served on the WTSBOA Executive Board as President and on the TMEA Board of Directors as State Band Chair. He currently serves as the Technology and Event Data Chair for WTSBOA. He also serves as Fine Arts Portfolio Reviewer for the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) and is also a member of the SCS Fine Arts Leadership Council.
Mr. Chipman and his wife Dr. Carol King-Chipman, also a band director in the Shelby County School System, have been married for 31 years and have one child. Mr. and Dr. Chipman were recognized in 2009 with the Thomas P. Westendorf Award by the Bartlett TN Arts Council for their many years of service in music education to the Bartlett, TN community where they reside.
